GERARD WHATELEY SETS NEW BENCHMARK IN SPORTS BROADCASTING

GERARD HAS REACHED A NEW CAREER PINNACLE, CALLING SOME OF THE GREATEST OLYMPIC TRACK MOMENTS OF ALL TIME FOR NINE AT THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPICS.

After becoming a household name nationally calling football, cricket, horse racing and the SuperBowl, Gerard perfected the Olympic track and marathon broadcasts alongside Tamsyn Lewis-Manou.

In the Men’s 100m Final photo finish between Noah Lyles, the American showman and the young Jamaican star, Kishane Thompson, Gerald not only expertly built suspense before the race, but he also used supreme judgement to refrain from naming the gold medal athlete until the official result landed.

Gerard named Jess Hull’s 1500 metre silver as Australia’s best medal at the Olympics.

“Without diminishing anything that Australia achieved in a spectacularly successful Games, I’ll argue all day long that Jess Hull’s silver medal is the pinnacle athletic achievement at these games,” he told SEN Breakfast.

In a Sydney Morning Herald deep dive into Gerard’s appointment, Konrad Marshall outlined the months of preparation undertaken to deliver the sublime week of commentary at Strade de France.

He’s been studying for this – training – for six months, schooling himself for three hours each lunchtime (after hosting SEN radio) and three hours at night (after hosting AFL360 on Foxtel) – both of which graciously agreed to loan him to Nine, the owner of this masthead – then all day on Sundays, Konrad wrote.

He has cycled through every recent Olympics and World Championships – from Rio to London, Doha to Tokyo, Eugene to Budapest – watching every event, in order, to get the storylines right, then feeding copious notes into a “superdoc” filled with medal counts, historic quirks and name pronunciations.

Gerard also collaborated with Andy Lee and Channel 9 on a collection of vignettes broadcast throughout the Olympic coverage called The Comparison Man – an entertaining demonstration of just how good the athletes really are.

Cadel joined the Nine broadcast team to sit alongside Phil Liggett in his final Olympics, Scott McGrory OAM and Sophie Scott for the Men’s and Women’s Individual Time Trials, Road Races and Mountain Bike competitions.

He added detailed insight to each broadcast covering the athletes’ preparation, physical and emotional status, and intricacies of the courses having competed so famously across the region during his own professional career.

He was overjoyed to witness Grace Brown’s gold medal Women’s Individual Time Trial race having followed her career from country Victoria 2015 to the world stage ahead of announcing her retirement.
